GET TO KNOW AMELIA
What is one thing people might not know about you?
I grew up on a ranch in Saskatchewan for seventeen years of my life. My family raised and trained thoroughbred horses. I grew up with other animals such as: chickens, cats, dogs, ponies and a donkey. My neighbors had cattle, so I would help with moving them to different pastures (on my horse) and tagging calves in the spring. That life shaped me to be disciplined, patient, hard-working, loving, and resilient. My lifestyle was heavily based on living off of the land, which means that I know how to hunt, fish, track, garden, harvest wild plants and berries.
What is your Favorite film or book?
A book that had an impact on me was “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer. She combines Indigenous worldviews, scientific perspectives, and ethnobotany. With those topics combined, it brought me a new perspective. Rather than comparing the differences between spirituality and science, the author reflected the similarities. Additionally, her writing style has an innate way of making you feel like you are living in the stories she describes. It was a refreshing and invigorating read that continues to have an impact on me.
What is one thing you have always wanted to learn or know how to do?
I have always wanted to learn how to dance Tango, Salsa or Bachata. I love the music and the dance style because it is elegant, sensual, and passionate. I think movement of the body is healing and liberating. Whenever I get the chance to dance, I love embodying the music and not thinking about anything else in that moment.
When you’re not modelling, what else are you up to?
If you can’t find me on a set, you will find me on campus or a coffee shop. I am studying my undergrad at Simon Fraser University with my major in Political Science. Additionally, I work as a co-researcher. The aim of the research project is to develop a leadership framework for Urban Indigenous Women. This framework is to be utilized in work places and organizations across Canada. I will be contributing to developing the findings into an article to be published in either a Canadian or International journal, which I am very proud of! My goal is to pursue a career in either law, diplomacy, or policy development.
